Summerhouse Lagnö

The setting is the Stockholm archipelago, natural ground sloping gently down to the sea in the south, mostly open with a few trees and bushes. Unlike other projects we worked on located on more isolated islands in the archipelago without car access from the mainland, this site was relatively easy to reach also with heavy transports. This, together with the client's desire for a maintenance-free house inspired us to search for a way to design the house as an integral part of nature, where the material's weight and color scale connects to the archipelago granite bedrock, rather than a light light wooden cottage. The two building volumes are placed side by side and form a line that clarifies their position in the landscape, just at the border... More

Martin Luther Church Hainburg

Architectural Concept In less than a year a protestant church together with a sanctuary, a church hall and supplementary spaces was built in the centre of the Lower Austrian town Hainburg, at the site of a predecessor church that doesn’t exist anymore since the 17th century. The shape of the building is derived from that of a huge “table”, with its entire roof construction resting on the legs of the “table” – four steel columns. Another key element is the ceiling of the prayer room: its design language has been developed from the shape of the curved roof of a neighboring Romanesque ossuary – the geometry of this century-old building is translated into a form, in line with the times, via today’s digital instruments. The play with li... More

D House

The power of architecture lies in the tradition of the place in which it arises. In Zabrze, a city of Upper Silesia metropolis, the building tradition closely related to the culture of coal and steel is expressed by red brick and solid craftsmanship. Yet the culture of coal and steel has passed. Too often, together with this culture, into the oblivion also go architecture, memories, sentiments... Let’s start from the beginning yet. The project is a redevelopment of a small single-family house from the 1930s situated on a really small parcel in a city among tenement houses from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Atypical (urban) and difficult location of this building – on a tiny parcel between bustling and noisy streets – was a real... More

Escuela Nacional de Teatro

The location of the Drama Center has a unique set of contextual conditions. The site has on its northern and western edges, two perpendicular highways, as well as a metro line, which generate continual, competing movements. A circular off-ramp links these two arteries in front of the site. In contrast to these ever-present conflicting circulations, are the recording studios, which form a static backdrop to the lot's front. The program includes three performance areas and their support facilities, rehearsal rooms, lecture halls, administration offices, a cafeteria, a gym, set design studios, costume design labs, and a library. The challenge of situating over 100,000 square feet of programmed space on an awkward, triangular corner site... More

China Wood Sculpture Museum

MAD Architects unveiled the completed China Wood Sculpture Museum located in Harbin, China. The 200-meter long building, sheathed in metal, sits nestled in a densely residential area, adding a cultural and surreal essence to the surrounding urban context. Appearing so evident amidst a thriving metropolitan district of Harbin, China, spanning 200 meters in length, the China Wood Sculpture Museum sits as a locational anomaly, seemingly out of place, surrounded by a densely populated Chinese-style neighborhood and residential complexes. The museum embodies some of the foremost conceptual and formal ideals that define the work of MAD, bringing out an expression and abstraction of nature to an otherwise quotidian surrounding. The boundaries b... More

ACROS FUKUOKA

The design for ACROS “Asian Crossroads Over the Sea” Fukuoka proposes a powerful new solution for a common urban problem: reconciling a developer's desire for profitable use of a site with the public's need for open green space. The plan for Fukuoka fulfills both needs in one structure by creating an innovative agro-urban model. Among Emilio Ambasz' recent projects, ACROS Fukuoka - Prefectural International Hall is a most powerful synthesis of urban and park forms. Its north face presents an elegant urban facade with a formal entrance appropriate to a building on the most prestigious street in Fukuoka's financial district. The south side of the Hall extends an existing park through its series of terraced gardens that climb the full heigh... More

Pool House Florida

In October 2011 we received an exhilarating email by Andrew R: "I have researched a number of highly successful up and coming contemporary architects with world- wide acclaim, and feel that the work of NL Architects exemplifies the vision I have in mind for my future home." Andrew purchased a property in Del Ray Beach, Florida and planned to replace the existing 12,000 square foot mansion with a smaller home of 8,000 and guest house of 4,000 square foot. Clearly a potential dream assignment; we immediately started drawing... we prepared a ‘sketchbook’ that intended to catalyze the design process. All proposals took the required pool as starting point. It occurred to us that most pools, however enjoyable, are just fairly standard,... More

Underground Rail Station Lohring

The architects RÜBSAMEN+PARTNER ARCHITEKTEN BDA INGENIEURE attached utmost importance to the generous dimensions of Lohring Underground Station in their design. The station can only be entered from one side and displays a spatial continuum that they not only retain, but also emphasise in their concept, and in so doing they create an interpretable space that depicts and communicates the associations linked with underground rail transit. The 95-metre-long hall of Lohring Underground Station can be seen in full while descending the stairs. Moreover, the user can perceive a slight bend to the right in the front section of the enormous tube. If he walks along the platform between the two tracks, he will also notice that the floor gently rises... More

Oase

Task: The temporary centre of pastoral care in the diocese of Linz, located on the steel company voestalpine’s site, was built decades ago and had to be pulled down due to its poor condition. The new building is designed to create good framework conditions for spiritual, liturgical as well as sociable secular events for both active and retired personnel. The initial project title “where man and work meet“ emphasises in which direction the needs of the people working at the steel company point. The plot of land lies between borders formed by the main traffic arteries Westbahn and Ebelsberger bypass and the voestalpine’s large industrial estate. This creates an island which, together with the deposit of a four-metre thick layer of s... More
