MAT Office

Founded by TANG Kangshuo and ZHANG Miao in 2013, MAT Office is a research and design studio started in Rotterdam and now practicing in Beijing. It is an office dedicating to the observation and speculation of emerging issues within the contemporary urbanization process while strategically seeking architectural possibilities based upon these principles.

MAT Office focuses on working, living and leisure space of young people community. Since 2014, MAT Office initiated the research project on future working space, Office 3.0, which has been accompanied by extensive results from research and design projects and was published in 2016. MAT office has also started research and design projects on community renewal and shared living space products. The recent architectural practice of MAT Office is mainly on co-working space, shared living space, community design, cultural education design, and public space design, brought by the new round of urban regeneration. MAT Office develops a series of proposals on the perspective of urban design, strategy of social and spatial transformations as well as architectural design.

MAT Office is also actively involved in exhibitions, teaching and cultural events. Their design works are widely reported by well-known media in and out of China, such as World Architecture, Urban Architecture, Domus, Designboom, Gooood, Archdaily, FRAME, bob, INTERINI and IDEAT, MAT Office participated in the 15th and 16thVenice Architecture Biennale. TANG Kangshuo and ZHANG Miao also participated in the open studio teaching in University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harbin Institute of Technology, Chinese Academy of Fine Art and Tsinghua University.
