Experienced by working at the renomated offices of Kazuyo Sejima (SANAA), Rem Koolhaas (OMA), Herman Hertzberger (Architectuurstudio HH) and Koen van Velsen, Tom Bergevoet started his own office in 2006. Neither scale nor programme, but an attitude towards space and use characterizes his work. Careful analyses of each assingment lead to custom-made proposals that are always based on a strong spatial concept. These concepts – that must be comprehensible, convincing and easy to communicate - form a guide for everyone involved in the process. Clients, advisors, employees and contractors, all are asked to commit to the concept. Decisions during the process might make a project more mature or layered, but may not confuse the concept. In this way, the spatial concept forms a contract that – if well controlled - guarantees a realised project coming close to the initially promised. In the work of Tom Bergevoet, important themes are lightness versus permanence, flexibility versus identity and reason versus arbitrariness. Context is always a key-factor in determining a concept. In the office, well equipped teams of employees, free-lancers, professional advisors and critics are carefully composed on project-base. Big elaboration-jobs are outsourced but direction on the projects always stays in the office.
