In the city of Eindhoven (NL), Stefano Boeri Architetti presents the first social housing Vertical Forest in the world. Drawing experience from their world-famous Bosco Verticale in Milan, the 19-storey residential tower features 135 trees of various species on each of its four facades along with 10,000 shrubs and plants of a smaller size.

In total, the building accommodates 125 apartments for predominantly low-income individuals, with an emphasis on providing housing for young couples. Though the flats are small, coming in at less than 50 square meters, a sense of expansiveness is offered by terraces that are more than 4 square meters. Each balcony includes one tree and twenty shrubs.

For elements related to the organic elements of the project, Stefano Boeri Architetti consulted with Laura Gatti Studio, who specialize as agronomists and also collaborated on the Vertical Forest in Milan.

Given the affordable nature social housing, construction cost was an essential element of the project. Know-how and experience acquired by Stefano Boeri Architetti during the construction of the Vertical Forest in Milan was thus highly helpful in ensuring project efficiencies.

Key cost control elements included here include the prefabrication of the building’s main components, rationalization of technical solutions for the facades, as well as the optimization of resources related to the project and construction process.

The maintenance of the building, including its plants, is undertaken and managed directly by Sint Trudo and includes a team of flying gardeners who carry out works at considerable heights.
