The newly inaugurated Aarhus Station South exemplifies modern architectural practices with a strong emphasis on employee well-being and sustainable solutions. This project reflects a collaborative effort between architects, employees, and management to create a facility that meets the demands of firefighting while prioritizing environmental responsibility and staff comfort.
EMPLOYEE WELL-BEING

From the planning stages, Aarhus Station South was shaped by input from its future users. Employees were involved in the design process to ensure the structure meets their needs and enhances their work environment. This approach resulted in a fire station that integrates practical functionality with a high standard of occupational health and safety.

One standout feature is the clear delineation between dirty and clean zones, minimizing contamination risks and ensuring a safer workplace. The station is equipped with modern amenities, including a garage for emergency vehicles, washing facilities, storage, locker rooms, and crew rooms on the ground floor. The upper floors house welfare areas, featuring a kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, a fitness room, a TV room, and common areas, providing comfortable living spaces during shifts.

COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is a core aspect of Aarhus Station South’s design. The building incorporates eco-friendly features aimed at reducing its environmental footprint. Solar panels on the roof provide a renewable energy source, and electric vehicle charging stations support green transportation.

An innovative aspect of the station is its underground rainwater collection tank, allowing rainwater to be harvested and used for refilling fire trucks, reducing the consumption of drinking water and emphasizing sustainable practices.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
Aarhus Station South is a three-story building characterized by its use of materials and design. The exterior is clad in Burnt Wood, a traditional Japanese technique for wood preservation, known as ‘Shou Sugi Ban’ or ‘Yakisugi’, that enhances durability and fire resistance. The doors and windows are painted in 'fire truck red,' creating a functional and symbolic visual identity.

The interior layout supports the demands of firefighting operations and a comfortable environment for the staff. The ground floor's practical facilities ensure firefighters can efficiently prepare for emergencies, while the upper floors offer restful areas with a sense of home for downtime.

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
Aarhus Station South is a fully operational fire station, staffed around the clock to serve the southern part of Aarhus. With approximately 600 emergency calls per year, the station plays a crucial role in community safety. It also houses a workshop where about 100 vehicles from the East Jutland Fire Department are inspected, repaired, and maintained.
