The location of the medical research laboratory building of Peking University's Medical Department makes it necessary to establish a site perception that faces both the urban and campus perspectives: for urban rapid transportation, the building needs to be powerful, monolithic and massive, while for the slow traffic environment facing the campus, the building needs to be pleasant in scale and environmentally friendly.

The building is thus composed of two high-rise slab buildings along the Fourth Ring Road and the College Road respectively, which are connected by the glass corridor volume, and slightly recessed on the third floor of the building, achieving two individual blocks vertically as well, thus forming a complete image for both the 10-meter elevated expressway and the campus. The building is cladded with gray and white stone panels, with the basement exits in the podium and courtyard partially with red rust steel plates, which echoes the existing red brick buildings in the 1950s.

Various types of medical, pharmaceutical and public health laboratories included in the scientific research laboratory building of Beijing Medical University put forward strict and complex requirements for the design in terms of ventilation, cleanliness, vertical transportation of pollutants, etc. The first floor of the building is the entrance hall, MRI laboratory and other laboratories, the second floor is the public experimental platform, and the third floor and above are various laboratories.

In order to adapt to the flexible needs of different types of laboratories, the building adopts a two-corridor laboratory space layout, and the plan module can be flexibly changed according to different use needs. The pharmaceutical laboratory is placed on a higher floor to shorten the distance of the vertical ventilation duct and reduce the floor area occupied. The animal laboratory is located on the top three floors of the building to reduce personnel crossing and facilitate ventilation.

When the building was completed in 2021, more than eight years have passed since the project was designed. The key laboratories of the school have moved in one after another. Its window lights being bright at night, the building has become one of the sights of the city.
