This house embraces its steep vegetated site overlooking San Francisco Bay with a palette of oiled timber, operable glass and broad overhanging roof planes. The contours of the site are reflected in the positioning of forms to meet the view and ground plane.
Two slate-clad roof planes are set at an angle to one another, responding to the curving upper contour of the site and providing two different points of outlook for the sleeping and living areas. The entry and stairwell serve as a hinge point of this composition and allow vertical circulation from the suspended front edge of the floor planes.
A courtyard is created between the upper edge of the site and the interior spaces, pulling in the morning sun and allowing the house to connect to both protected and suspended external spaces amongst the tree canopies, perched above San Francisco Bay.
