Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum incorporates ancient kiln tectonics and materials
Known as the ‘Porcelain Capital of the World,’ Jingdezhen (China) has been producing pottery for 1,700 years. Historically a major exporter of porcelain to Europe, Jingdezhen developed around kiln complexes which included the kiln as well as workshops and houses. Furthermore, the city’s street pattern was generated by the nature of the industry, with the main streets running in a north-south orientation towards the Chang River, which served as the major point of transportation.

Sun Room
Sun Room is an in-situ composite woven bamboo shell, which explores the potential of digital design and fabrication techniques to reinvigorate traditional craft. Bamboo weaving is both a sustainable and culturally significant method of construction in China, but due to its complexity and reliance on skilled labour, is in deep decline. The Sun Room project sought to apply digital design methodologies to break down the complexity of this age old craft - simultaneously exploring its potential at an architectural scale and its accessibility as an alternative construction methodology for local people. Over the course of the project, students from the University of Hong Kong and local villagers worked with the last remaining bamboo weaver in Peit... Mehr

798 BRIC Gallery
This art space takes the metaphysical blank space in abstract paintings by contemporary Chinese artists as its starting point. It uses natural light, simple black strokes and translucent materials to create a fuzzy, dream-like physical realm. The project is located within Beijing’s 798 Arts District, as a renovation of a former factory, originally build in the 1970’s during Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward. The project is conceived as a communication space, open to anybody interested in artistic, cultural and spiritual topics. An almost paradoxical juxtaposition, given its previous industrial function. The project started with a chance encounter during a long-haul flight between Amsterdam and Beijing. The client a renowned cognitive scientist... Mehr
