Creating a hub for social and cultural enterprises through an innovative circular design approach.
The Kaserne area –a former military barracks complex in central Basel– has undergone several transformations over the years, the most recent one has seen the prominent building become a leading hub of social and cultural enterprises in Switzerland.
The main building of the Kaserne was renovated by Focketyn del Rio, opening it up towards the city and the river Rhine. Fluxdock, in partnership with Studio Banana, won a public tender organised by the City of Basel to become the operator of the space now called kHaus, including event and co-working facilities. IAAC expands 3D Printed Earth Forest Campus using Crane WASP 3D printer
The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has completed the 3D printing of a new low-carbon building prototype using locally available earth and natural materials. The IAAC used a Crane WASP 3D printer to create the experimental lightweight building as part of an extension to the institute's 3D printed Earth Forest Campus in Barcelona's Collserola Natural Park. The project represents an important step in the development of a sustainable, zero-mile and affordable housing model.

Having to diminish que quantity of resources that we extract from the soil, it's mandatory that new buildings start to use more and more existing materials and structures.This building, located in Peso da Régua, in a beautiful area of the Douro region (UNESCO World Heritage), was my second approach (after POC Caldeirão) to the use of second-hand shipping containers as the core structure, with the effort of turning it's final image into a qualified and contextualized work.

‘Wood You Believe?’ recycles four tons of post-consumer wooden objects
Wood You Believe?, eine von CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati und dem Architekten Italo Rota für die Gruppo Saviola entworfene Installation, wurde erstmals auf der 61. Ausgabe des Salone del Mobile in Mailand präsentiert.

Zeichnungen der Installation, die bereits hier auf Archello veröffentlicht wurden, wurden von CRA Make auf dem Messegelände Fiera Milano zum Leben erweckt. Vier Tonnen gebrauchter Holzobjekte wurden an der Fassade einer großen kubischen Struktur befestigt. Die Installation lenkte die Aufmerksamkeit auf das sehr reale Problem des Materialabfalls in der Möbelindustrie.

Wood You Believe?, eine neue Installation für den Salone del Mobile 2023, ist eine experimentelle Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem ökologisch-ethischen Unternehmen Gruppo Saviola, dem Design- und Innovationsbüro CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati und dem Architekten Italo Rota. MVRDV completes the dramatic transformation of a 1970s city block in Paris
In the Paris neighbourhood of Montparnasse, the now completed Gaîté Montparnasse by MVRDV is a complete transformation of a mixed-used block dating from 1974. The project retains and rationalizes previously existing uses such as a hotel, shopping centre, offices, and a library while densifying the construction with the addition of social housing and a kindergarten. And in addition to providing a more welcoming and accessible environment for pedestrians, the project also embraces the circular economy throughout, particularly with the retention of significant portions of the previous structure.

Taisugar Circular Village in Taiwan embraces the principles of circular construction and design
A key principle of the circular economy is that materials are reused and virtually no waste is created. The design of Taisugar Circular Village by Bio Architecture Formosana in Tainan, Taiwan takes this principle into account by analyzing the building construction and deconstruction plans upfront to minimize waste. The use of a modularized design with modular building components further ensured build efficiency.

Flevoland Food Forum reveals a compelling adobe façade drawn from the land beneath
Located in the Netherlands, Flevoland Food Forum pavilion is positioned more than four meters below sea level on the Floriade Park in Almere. The building reveals the story of the site in a unique way by lifting a 5-meter thick layer of Flevoland soil to the sea-level line.
