Chiar-W is a chair designed and manufactured by Kichul Lee of Architect-K for the owner of Songdo House designed by him. Kichul Lee, who is attracting attention as a newly emerging architect, wanted to design a unique chair to match the Songdo House with a minimal curvature. Through collaboration with sculptor Doosu Shin, Chair-w, which resembles the shape of bones and muscles, was realized.

During the 3D modeling process, the size of each member was determined by applying the user's body dimensions. In particular, the seat was modeled as the shape of the hip when seated. Also, the brace members are placed to decentralize the load between chair legs and other members. The load follows so naturally the flow of power that the reaction force to body can be minimized. Although chair-W is made of pure wood, the body cannot feel discomfort for a long time at all.

Also, the Manufacturing Process of Chair-W is very interesting. The Carbonization in Kiln makes ash wood lightly and eliminates the distortion. (This process removes iteulsu pesticides that remain in the ash wood.) The carbonized wood is cut into 16 parts by a CNC machine and polished by the sculptor's hand. Through assembling process, ash wood is finally reborn into a body-friendly chair.

Chair-W was selected for the IIdexcanada Woodshop 2015 finalist and awarded Juror's Choice at the Toronto Design Offsite Festival Awards 2016.
