Francisco Mangado

Born in Navarre in 1957, Francisco Mangado earned his architecture degree from the University of Navarre School of Architecture, where he has been teaching since 1982. He has also been Guest Professor at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Architecture, and Guest Professor at l’École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. He is currently Visiting Professor at Cornell. At his alma mater in Pamplona he is a Professor Extraordinaire of Projects. In June 2008 he set up the Architecture and Society Foundation. Notable among Mangado’s works are the Auditorium and Congress Center of Navarre, the Place Pey Berland in Bordeaux, the Municipal Exhibition and Congress Center of Ávila, the Archaeology Museum of Vitoria, the Auditorium of Teulada, the Football Stadium of Palencia, and the Spanish Pavilion at Expo Zaragoza 2008. Some more recent projects are the Congress Center of Palma de Mallorca and the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias in Oviedo. For his professional work Mangado has earned numerous honors, including the Andrea Palladio Architecture Award, the City of Thiene Award, the Architécti Prize, the CEOE and FAD awards for architecture as well as the Saloni, Enor, Ascer, and Construmat, the COAL Architecture Award, the Giancarlo Ius Gold Medal given by the UIA at the 4th Barbara Capochin Biennial, the Copper in Architecture Award given in London, the García Mercadal Prize, and the International Architecture Award of the Chicago Athenaeum. In October 2009 the Spanish Association of Architecture Institutes (CSCAE) bestowed on him the National Architecture Award. On 6 December 2011 he earned a RIBA International Fellowship, a distinction that the Royal Institute of British Architects gives to non-UK practitioners for their particular contribution to the field of architecture. Similarly in February 2013 he was granted an AIA Honorary Fellowship, given by the American Institute of Architects to non-US professionals who have contributed significantly to architecture and society. In June 2013, the Municipal Auditorium of Teulada was named winner of the RIBA EU Award, given by the Royal Institute of British Architects in recognition of buildings within the European Union but outside the United Kingdom.
