Narrow House on Bagattenstraat generates a sense of spaciousness with its split level concept

Located on a very narrow lot in the city of Ghent, this house design by NU Architectuuratelier creates a sense of spaciousness by arranging various residential functions in split levels around a central staircase. The result is a unique concept of linked spaces.

Reversing the typical house layout, living areas are located upstairs with sleeping areas below. This move compensates for the limited surface area and dedicates the beautiful city views to spaces used most often daily.

On the ground level, facing the street, a multi-purpose reception room connects to an inner courtyard. Beyond the courtyard, an office/studio space spreads across two storeys. This configuration allows for a connection to the street despite the fact the main living area is at the top level of the home.

Overall, the house has a simple structure, a characteristic that registers in the finishes.

The exterior is clad with stainless steel corrugated sheets and a concrete plinth with a similarly wavy surface.
