This project is a little kitchen in a harbourside apartment. A small space presented a challenge to make a place that felt light and airy. A modest budget meant that the design process was one of constant whittling down to 'as little as possible', without loss of useful things like storage.
This is the architect's own home, so there was an opportunity to try things without client approval. Cupboards were eschewed in favour of open shelving, to make the room feel more spacious.
Everything is in easy reach and this openness dovetails with the discipline required to live in small spaces - if it's all on show, it stays tidy.
A simple joinery unit contains all of the working parts of the kitchen - fridge, freezer, dishwasher, cooktop, oven - integrated below a cool marble bench.
Rich green joinery and cheerful yellow tapware mix delight with utility
