Construction of the new Shanghai headquarters of the East China Electronic Power Design Institute began in January 2021. The building, designed by Archea Associati studio with structural support from ECADI – East China Architectural Design & Research Institute was created with the aim of renewing the pre-existing urban fabric.
The project aims to integrate the various functions within a single block where all functional needs are centralized, making the project more economical and efficient. The intervention aims to respect the existing scene and respond to site characteristics, taking into account the cityscape and general planning requirements, as well as the desire to make the building a landmark of the company itself.
The building faces two main roads in Shanghai city: Wuning Road to the east and Zhongshan North Road (Inner Ring Elevated) to the south, a location that gives it the potential to become a city landmark. The project maintains two entrances on Wuning Road used one as the main entrance and the other as a secondary entrance for vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
A distinguishing element of the entire building is a long corten ramp (1 km) positioned in the west facade that forms an access path to the various floors, while two ramps to the west and southeast lead to the underground garages.
The building has sixteen above-ground levels covering 49,516 square meters and two basement floors of 24,944 square meters for a total of 74,460 square meters. The second floors will house multiple functions: reception, meeting rooms, exhibition area, gymnasium, conference room, and archives. The middle floors will be open space intended for work areas, while the top floors will be used for executive offices and meeting rooms. For the rooftop, however, a more recreational function is planned through the presence of a small bar and garden.
