Bridging Worlds Through Art and Tradition

Miguel de la Torre como Arquitectos

In honor of Día de Muertos, “Unexpected Reflections” is an immersive installation that reinterprets Mexico’s beloved tradition of honoring the deceased from a contemporary perspective. Conceived by artist Miguel de la Torre, this piece explores the boundaries between the realms of the living and the dead, inviting visitors to cross a symbolic portal and participate actively in the ritual of remembrance for those who are no longer with us.

At the heart of the installation is a mirrored wall, acting as a symbolic boundary between these two worlds. As visitors see their reflections in the mirror, they experience a profound connection to the space, with their own image becoming a metaphor for the eternal bond between life and death. This visual element is an innovative interpretation of Mexican tradition, where the mirror represents the duality and coexistence of both realms.

The audience is essential to “Unexpected Reflections,” as their active participation completes the meaning of the work. Upon entering the space, visitors are invited to write the names of loved ones on wooden blocks, each symbolizing a departed soul. These blocks are then placed in the realm of the dead, transforming the installation into a collective altar that grows with each new contribution. This symbolic act allows each participant to share their own story, grief, and memory, making the space a shared and intimate tribute.

One of the most moving aspects of the installation is its focus on community and the permanence of memory. At the end of the event, all the wooden blocks will be united into a final artwork, which will be displayed in the artist’s studio. This collective piece not only commemorates those honored during the installation but also preserves the bond between participants and their loved ones, turning the installation into a lasting visual legacy of shared memory.

This installation is more than an art exhibition; it is a space of reflection and reverence, where the mystical meets the modern and the tangible mingles with the spiritual. Through this work, Miguel de la Torre has created an environment of contemplation and respect that honors tradition and allows visitors to experience Día de Muertos in a profound way, evoking the eternal journey between life and death.
