Few things are more satisfying to a designer than creating a beautiful space: one that moves the soul and inspires more beautiful thinking in the people who inhabit it. But what makes a space truly inspirational? It’s not just beauty – this is deeper than the ornamental. It’s not just greenery and windows – that would be a simple fix. Spaces that truly inspire feature a combination of creative engagement, quiet refuge and an openness to new possibilities. Together, these qualities make up Beautiful Thinking. CREATIVITY A GATEWAY TO CREATIVITY Why do we choose to sit on our front porches instead of our back yards? Why do we leave the home office to work in a busy coffee shop? For exposure – or rather, for controlled exposure. For the creative engagement that comes from a new, information-rich venue. In beautiful spaces, we feel inspired by our surroundings – by the world, by nature, by each other. CLARITY PEACE AND QUIET CLARITY Devices are loud. Screens are insistent. Interruptions demand action. This is why we wrongly associate quiet with passive. There is a hidden energy in having ample time and space to process, to produce, to rest or to heal. In these actions, we engage with our inner selves. If we design for it, a small, well-lighted office nook can be like a log in a forest clearing. POSSIBILITY A VIEW TO POSSIBILITY How does positive change happen? Through stimulus, by natural methods that are older than the stars. Can our spaces mimic this ancient process? Can thoughtful design keep us alert, invigorated, inspired and intuitive? Yes. With a careful mingling of movement and variation, we can hack environments, accommodate individual preferences, and open up a new range of possibilities.
