The Novartist Pavilion by AMDL CIRCLE is a new exhibition, meeting and event centre at the Novartis Campus Basel. The first publicly accessible building on the campus site, which includes a collection of other high profile buildings completed by architects such as David Chipperfield, Frank Gehry, and Tadao Ando, the project aims to promote dialogue about life sciences and serve as a resource that showcases the past, present, and future of healthcare. In particular, the building houses the Wonders of Medicine, a permanent multimedia exhibition designed by ATELIER BRÜCKNER.

The distinctive, zero-energy media façade was developed through a series of parametric designs by AMDL  that determined the geometric and graphic image of the façade, which was further designed and engineered in collaboration with iart.

The façade includes a new generation of organic photovoltaic and a grid of LED lights that illuminate the works of the three international artists – Daniel Canogar, Esther Hunziker, and Semiconductor. The artists, curated by HEK (House of Electronic Arts) worked with scientists to develop light installations inspired by the shapes and colours of cells and molecules. Themes of sustainability and the convergence of art and science also enter into the works.

The building’s circular plan is structured across two levels. At ground level, 360-degree glazing allows for natural light to enter the space and afford views of the Rhine. Next to the entrance foyer is a café and check-in area. Acoustic curtains are employed to divide spaces while a wide range of digital technologies ensures it is a state-of-the-art destination.

On the mezzanine, a multimedia theatre with stair seating links the ground to the upper floor, drawing visitors to the Wonders of Medicine Exhibition. Thought visitors experience a fluidity of movement and a circular journey through space.
