White Building a watery inspired feature in dialogue with Chengdu’s urban history

Designed by CROX, the White Building is a new feature building within the Chengdu Science and Technology Incubation Park in Chengdu, China. The park spans a 330 thousand square meter area with the overarching purpose of connecting Eastern and Western health industries within a communicative and ecologically friendly environment. Nestled within the surrounding hills, the architecture of the White Building is curving and soft, and throughout makes reference to the watery history of Old Chengdu, a city once rich with canals and pools of water.

The gleaming white exterior of the building integrates drop-shaped windows, which are arranged organically and twinkle under the sunlight. Alongside this, a half-moon pool forms a waterfall from the top of the building to the bottom, with the sound of water washing away any background noise that interferes with the building.

Arriving at the building’s inner atrium, a large oval pool appears. Dramatic skylights above reflect light off the water’s surface to the curving white walls and floor-to-ceiling glass that surrounds. A round hole in the middle of the pool is filled with earth, creating a small oasis for bamboo to grow.

The multi-level curving interior space accommodates leisure, exhibition, conference, reception and office uses together in an intimate and friendly way by offering open space and features such as the oval pool for people to gather around.

Green energy was considered throughout the design as rainwater collected in the pool helps to cool the building’s temperature.
