Designed for art lovers, the Gallery House located on the beautiful Kennebecasis River is a case study on modern forms with local, vernacular materials. Using selective and strategic openings in the project to heighten the experience of movement throughout the structure with light, the daily routines and processions become a material exploration. A simple exterior palate of cedar shingles, stone and glass keep this project grounded in its location in historic Rothesay New Brunswick. The interior transitions from solid stone in the entry sequences into more spacious living areas of wood and glass where visitors experience their vast art collection throughout.
What was the brief?
Our task was to create a well crafted residence that was unique, and not built to any historical style while at the same time, feeling 'timeless'.
What were the key challenges?
As the site was in the middle of an existing neighborhood, but situated on the shores of the amazing Kennebecasis River, our challange was to create an open home that allowed for natural views while respecting privacy in the community.
What were the solutions?
In order to create privacy from the street, our team played with the massing volumes and material changes in order to create openings and views to the neighborhood at select openings, thereby almost disguising the grand openings to the river behind.
