New England Biolaboratories

A*PT Architecture (Atelier Pagnamenta Torriani) en tant que Architectes.

The existing laboratory was operating on a 19th century estate within a collection of Victorian mansions. In addition to a new molecular biology facility, the program called for a winter garden, recreational space, and a 400-seat auditorium.

Our design subtly blends with the landscape and preserves the beauty of the idyllic setting. To accomplish this, we designed a series of splaying fingers to house the working research spaces, which would slowly emerge from the grounds by hunkering into the natural slope of the hillside. These outcroppings are connected by a submerged, arching spine of corridor and support functions, culminating into an auditorium to the West.Natural light reaches all of the working spaces of the labs through the courtyards, which also serve as areas of respite for researchers. On approaching the building, the only thing in view is the continuous grassy lawn of the grounds. From the lake, the structure is a diaphanous crystalline formation emerging from the slope. The idea of a building without presence or heft, but more of an excavation, is executed in a language of geology and topology as opposed to traditional architecture.
