Westside Waterfront Design Competition

A*PT Architecture (Atelier Pagnamenta Torriani) en tant que Architectes.

Atelier Pagnamenta Torriani was awarded First Prize winning entry in the international design competition for a re-conceptualization of the Westside waterfront in Manhattan, from Battery Park City to 44th Street.

Every city has its own logical urban structure, generated and shaped by the design, history and geography.

Every site has its own morphological character, shaped by the relationship with nature as well as with the built environment.

Any urban intervention should recognize and understand both the urban structure and the site character as the starting points for the architectural idea.

The Streets will extend well into the river, flanked by new piers, about 60 ft wide and 120 ft high.

The use of the new structures reflects the character of the adjoining neighborhoods.

Five marinas, including the conversion of Pier 40, mark the different neighborhoods. They will have mixed commercial and residential use besides serving as ferry terminals.

All along the project the reconstructed shoreline becomes the Park, a natural recreational space contrasting with the built environment.

The natural shoreline, as the memory of the original seaboard, is interlaced with the city blocks, the streets and the pier structures.
