Northern New Zealand home interprets the mountain cabin in a modern way

Designed by Fearon Hay Architects, this winter retreat in Te Pakeke - a northern township of Wanaka (NZ) - is surrounded by a spectacular landscape of mountains and lakes. With its refined material palette and feature shutters, it is a modern example of the mountain cabin.

Spatially, the house is situated within a solid feeling courtyard perimeter wall, which envelopes the private space within and protects the cabin from the cold prevailing winds that often dominate the site. Glazed openings are strategically located within the walls to control views from the house.

A dynamic feature comes with the custom design of perforated shutters, which provide layers of filtering and shading  - and a playful yellow colour accent.

The material palette is otherwise subdued, consisting of timber and steel alongside concrete for a timeless, contemporary expression.
