The 44 sustainable apartments on Spieghelstraat in Alkmaar are a cradle-to-cradle project and almost completely energy-neutral construction (beng) of Woonwaard housing association, designed by Kraaijvanger Architects.
Reclaimed wood
Bouwgroep Dijkstra Draisma installed around 750 m2 of reclaimed western red cedar facade boards in the walkways of an apartment complex in Alkmaar. The reclaimed cladding boards were 'harvested' in Belgium and revitalised and optimised by CirQ Wood before being treated with the sustainable fire retardant, Burnblock®.
Reusing the wood means that the 10,646 kg of CO2 sequestered in the wood will remain stored for decades to come, but now forms part of the façade cladding of this beautiful circular apartment building!
Sustainable and durable fire retardant treatment
Lemahieu Fire Protection was called upon to apply a durable and CE-certified fire-retardant treatment with Burnblock® to achieve the required reaction to fire classification B-s2,d0. Burnblock® is a 100% natural product and Cradle-to-Cradle™ Gold certified.
The entire building project is also Cradle to Cradle®, almost total energy neutrality (BENG). The apartment complex is not connected to the gas network, but to the most sustainable heating network in the Netherlands*. Solar energy is used to generate electricity for the apartments.
*The HVC heating network in Alkmaar was named the most sustainable in the Netherlands in December 2017.
