HOUSING ON LAS CANTERAS BEACH

HENRIQUEZ Y LOPEZ come Architetti

The reform "Housing in La Playa de las Canteras" was developed in the coastal neighborhood of Guanarteme, on the isthmus of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The house in question is located in a building with a stepped façade, located on the first line of Playa de las Canteras avenue and with impressive views of the sea and its sunsets.

In its previous state, the house was of an elongated typology with two interior patios and with the façade on the opposite side of the access. A long and winding corridor extended from the entrance to the living spaces, leading to the different rooms of the house. The living room and the main bedroom opened onto a glazed space with an aluminum roof that served as a storage area and made it difficult to see the Las Canteras beach.

The reform of the house had two main objectives: to reduce the path of the entrance hall and to open the house towards the sea. For this, the space covered with aluminum was eliminated and the original space of the terrace was recovered. The interior layout was also reconfigured, opening all possible spaces towards Las Canteras beach, including the kitchen, which is now joined to the living room. This new configuration allows you to enjoy the incredible views.

The reform turned the entrance into a storage space and library. From here, the space opens up to the kitchen and living room through a diagonal that frames the views of the beach and gives the dining room a unique character, which becomes the heart of the house.

Through the living room there is access to the master bedroom, with an en-suite bathroom, whose entrance is now integrated into the front of the dressing room closet. This bathroom has a shower cabin that assumes the trapezoidal geometry generated by the diagonal of the dining room.

Both the living room and the master bedroom open onto the new terrace, transforming the old residual storage space into the main attraction of the house. The terrace was equipped with a concrete piece of furniture that is the visual continuation of the sofa in the living room. This piece of furniture acts as a bench and countertop (provided with a sink and storage) to enjoy meals and celebrations outside. The continuity of the sofa and the concrete bench on the terrace generates the spatial relationship between both environments, which are unified when the sliding doors on the terrace open. The solar control of the terrace is raised with an automatic awning that regulates its opening to suit the user.

The roofs of the house were designed by integrating the existing edge beams of the building. In this way, the space is visually ordered. They make up the volumes of each room that change in height depending on their uses and allow an open and continuous spatial distribution. The height of these pre-existing beams defines, in turn, the height of the doors, the kitchen, the cabinets, the exterior carpentry and the bathroom cladding, creating an atmosphere of harmony and order throughout the house.

The choice of materials creates a serene and clean atmosphere with the aim of enhancing the views of the beach and the horizon.
