A new build timber clad and light filled artist’s studio nestled around an existing Silver Birch tree and existing mature garden planting.
The studio is nestled into the corner of a once overgrown and neglected area of a suburban garden nurturing a prominent Silver Birch tree within its form. With an expanding family our client wanted to create a functional painting studio within their garden that retained, formed part ofand enhanced the existing landscape.
The Silver Birch tree was a garden key focal point and the studio was designed to wrap around it whilst allowing light to penetrate deep into the studio. To ensure the tree survived the construction process and grow to full maturity the studio was built on piles to avoid the weight of the studio crushing the tree’s roots. As well as being a focal point the tree also acts as an important sunshadein summer to the studio creating a dappled light within the space through the main windows either side.
The studio is clad in Western Red Cedar vertical cladding and has been left untreatedso that the timbercladding will grey and weather over time allowing the studio to blend into the planting. Inside the material choice of birch faced plywood and concrete floor offer natural warmth with industrial robustness.
The windows were positioned to split views out of and into the studio allowing occupants views across the garden or back to the house creating strong landscape connections. The glazed door to the rear allows light from the summer setting sun to penetrate though the studio causing the inside to glow as sun set approaches.
