Tatlin

Constructed in 1927 by the civil engineer V. Patek, the original “Telephone Exchange'' building at Number 5 Bakuniskaya Street is a classic example of Russian industrial constructivism. It is one of three identical buildings in Moscow. The four-story, T-shaped structure has not been used since digital telecommunications were introduced in the city and has been falling into decay for two decades.  Constructivism is the only unique Soviet-Russian grand architectural style, akin to the  Bauhaus school.  Many buildings in Western Europe were designed by students of this movement, including notable Soviet émigré Berthold Lubetkin. These architects applied the emerging method and style of the VKHUTEMAS school t... Altro

Klil Bauhouse

Transparence Minimalism in a Retro Sense Studio Samuelov has been designing Klil’s showrooms for many years. In 2020 an updated was needed to fit to the new Bauhaus series, and the story we have chosen in the showroom design showcase the style’s values: precise minimalism, functionality and a retro sense. The challenge in the design process was telling a story about an almost invisible product, a window that’s simply combines thin aluminum and a transparent glass, that practically blends into the space.   The creative solution was to highlight this specific quality, giving the product an interesting quiet appearance, allowing the store’s customers to walk through it. We decided to highlight the transparency an... Altro

A Minimalist Geometric Home

Altro

Villa Leitner

This modern flat roof villa, designed for a family of four in Pfaffenhofen, Germany, was awarded the first prize in the competition "House of the Year", organized by Europe's biggest living magazine "Schöner Wohnen". With its formal references to the “Bauhaus”, the L-shaped building impresses by its large glass fronts, through which light and air gain access inside. This impressed the jury as well as "the modern interpretation of the wood panel construction, whose weather-independent, accurate and fast prefabrication of quality is not to beat." Fairfaced concrete, wood and glass dominate the aesthetic simplicity of the building, accentuated by elements such as the historic cast-iron pillar in the living area. This was deli... Altro

Nordholt

This complex and fascinating puzzle of different cubes evolves on a sloping clearing in the forest near Frankfurt, Germany. The basic idea of the design uses the sightlines of two old trees standing on the property and benefits, apart from the general views of the surrounding nature, also from the skyline of Frankfurt. Along these lines of sight, cubes of different proportion are piled up around the central core of the staircase. With a height of nine metres throughout the entire building, this “heart of the house” serves as an exhibition space for the client’s alternating artwork, exposed through a skylight. The two-storey housing cube, stretching into the sky, contains a 6-meter library wall and an equally high window... Altro

Atelier Luxury Apartments Landscape

Real estate developer Carmel Partners awarded Surfacedesign creative control of the outside living spaces at its luxury apartment project Atelier, designed by architecture firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz.  Taking inspiration from the building’s proximity to the former Los Angeles Garment District, Surfacedesign’s overall approach was influenced by the Bauhaus textile patterns of Anni Albers.  Geometrical lines and shapes are repeated throughout the 33-story project’s two outdoor living spaces: pool/amenity deck and rooftop lounge.  Surfacedesign injected the textile inspiration into the composition, stitching together the hardscape with a rich landscape of native and Mediterranean plantings.   Atelier&rsq... Golden Stream

“I don't do special effects. I do characters. I do creatures”, Stan Winston, a famous movie special effect master from the Hollywood, once said it. What he tried to express was that what special effects do from the beginning is not merely creating a gorgeous effect for sounds and visuals, it is to truthfully create a brand new and completely unique character or a creature; such expression coincidentally matches the idea behind the creation of “Golden Stream”. During the preliminary stage of the design drafting, the owner’s own avant-garde thinking and innovative spirit can be felt from the progress of getting along. It also fuses the inspiration from a movie, Tron: Legacy, which is one of the owner’s favo... Altro
