Liane Lane

The Liane Lane residence, a recently completed 6,000 square-foot contemporary residence in Orange County received both a juried award, as well as the Member's Choice Award, in which members of the AIA vote online for their favorite project. This project involved a remodel and addition to an existing mid-century modern residence built in the 1960’s. The design explores contrapuntal relationships between form and materiality. The new entertainment space is contained within a steel and glass box, suspended weightlessly above the earthbound base of the existing single-level structure. A predominant skin of silver travertine slab reinforces the gravitas of the existing structure. The juxtaposition clarifies the intersection between the new and e... Altro

Bel Air Residence

A young couple, both avid collectors of art, reimagined a mid-century modernist house as a place to entertain, collect and reflect on contemporary art. The design included extensive renovation of the existing house, opening a continuous horizontal gallery space filled with both two and three-dimensional pieces. The interior landscape of art was complemented by a series of custom steel furniture fabrications including a wet bar, a highly sculptural piece in its own right. Careful placement of skylights and windows captured reflected, indirect light during the day. Along with natural daylight, artificial lighting was designed specifically to illuminate specific art works and the custom steel fabrications. The totality produces an interior... Altro

Exeter Place

Literally built ‘on’ the hillside, this project is a classic mid-century modern house built in the mid 1950’s. The original house had been designed, built and occupied by the original architect and changed hands in 2006. Our client loved the mid-century modern style and spent 8 months in Scandinavia living in the culture that helped spawn the movement. They came to us with three requests: 1) update the building to current standards of finish and space, 2) add more square footage for themselves and their family, and 3) keep the same charm and aesthetic of the original mid-century modern style. The first thing we did was remove the wall between the existing kitchen and the living room to open up the floor plan and take advantage of the amaz... Altro

Moltz Landscape

This landscape project needed to address the entry sequence to the mid-century modern Tucson residence, which was previously hidden and lacked clarity. The owner also wanted to create outdoor living space that would take advantage of Southern Arizona’s climate and the views to the surrounding desert and distant mountains. On the east side of the house mature trees volunteered in complete randomness. So an ordering system was needed to give logic to their presence and harvest their shade. Also, the land sloped awkwardly at the house, washing mud onto a brick patio outside the entry door. Therefore our intervention had to also correct this problem. To cue a visitor toward the front door, which was not at all in the front but on the si... Altro

Nuler-Cudahy Residence

Scope Of Work Partial tear down and reconstruction of a mid-century modern residence, resulting in a doubling of living space without altering the building’s footprint. Program requirements include the addition of a penthouse suite, optimized views of Puget Sound, and the creation of a dynamic setting for family life and modern art & furniture. Design Statement This design challenges the conventions of northwest modernism. The “bones” of the original mid-century modern building were preserved to reduce construction cost and environmental waste, overhangs were minimized to allow the free flow of light and view, wood beams and other stylistic conventions were dropped in favor of taught finishes and clean surfaces, and geometric forms...
