Morrisville State College: Center for Design and Technology

With new curricula that would support its transition from an associate to a baccalaureate degree-granting institution, Morrisville State College asked Perkins Eastman to transform a former agricultural building into a modern light-filled space for new programs in architecture and technology—the Center for Design and Technology. Forming a dynamic new entrance to the Morrisville campus, the character of the former dairy barn, an important campus structure, was preserved—reflecting the College’s longstanding commitment to sustainability—while the design is decidedly 21st-century. Indeed, the 23,000 sf LEED Silver building has itself become a teaching tool for the College’s new courses in sustainable architecture and interior design, enhanci... Altro

Kirribilli House

The brief was to provide a comfortable house. What makes a house comfortable? It's not a question of good padding on the lounges but the ability of a building to provide a climatically comfortable environment, a place where you seek refuge from the heat of the day or in the cold nights, without having to barricade yourself behind hermetically shut windows. The rammed earth walls and well located operable skylights, the sun drenched courtyard and the breezy verandah, the green roof and external shutters have all contributed to a most liveable waterfront residence and to win the AIA sustainable design award for 2011. The design was awarded as a proof that sustainable architecture can be applied to the top end of Residential architecture. Altro

Ellis St. Residential

This project was completed in September 2011 and consists of 12 apartments, in Chatswood. The apartments consist of a mix of 1 and 2 bedrooms with large outdoor terraces, drying areas, natural ventilation and an abundance of natural light. The upper storey apartments are two storeys. Planning codes required 30% of these units to be adaptable. Overall height was restricted to 3 storeys, but allowed underground car parking and an “attic” storey. Ground floor units have access to private outdoor spaces. For the higher units, generous north, east and west oriented balconies can be accessed from all of the open plan living, dining, kitchen spaces. Smaller, more private loggias can also be accessed from the east and west facing bedrooms. Th... Altro

Building implementing holistic architectural design

Comment of the Holcim Awards jury Africa Middle East The jury acknowledges the building’s design approach to be “sustainable by design”: sustainability being an architectural quality that emerges when a building responds to and integrates its social and physical environments in the development of its form and function to make effective and efficient use of resources. The project is an example of a holistic sustainable approach applicable in climatically challenging but technically sophisticated environments. Project description by author Sustainable by design - with the Swiss Village Sprinter Building in Masdar City we are trying to implement a holistic architectural design approach. Sustainability is not considered as a requiremen... Altro

Secondary school with passive ventilation system

Comment of the Holcim Awards jury Africa Middle East The jury commended this project because of its broad approach towards enmeshing discreet sustainable aspects of the program into a comprehensive whole. The Secondary School Gando is constructed by the local community and builds not only a series of structures, but also a sense of identity and enhanced social cohesion. Its “urban design” has the potential to act as an anchor point in the village structure. The project, as one element of a long-term school development, makes use of “hightech” ideas that are implemented with low-tech means. It intelligently leverages the site’s characteristics and locally-available materials. The project itself generates positive impacts upon both the soc... Altro

Mona Vale House

The client for the project has a long standing interest in building sustainability developed through working at the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA). With this interest in mind, the client approached Choi Ropiha to design a house that would demonstrate a number of active and passive sustainable initiatives whilst accommodating a contemporary coastal lifestyle. The project is sited on the south side of Mona Vale Headland and has expansive views over Mona Vale Beach to the south. This south facing aspect and the narrow site proportions combine to limit the passive design potential and accordingly establish the key design challenge for the project. Our response orients the house toward the view to the south, but opens up... Altro

Gebhartstrasse

The beginingThe story of the three-apartment building situated at the east entrance to the emblematic Liebefeld neighborhood begins with the wish to be the first Minergie-P-Eco certified multi-family house in Switzerland. The Swiss "Minergie" sustainability label consists in designing a building more energetically efficient than a project who fulfills the minimal building market requirements. The "P" letter stays for the Passive House standards and the "Eco" for the recyclability of the materials in use and the noise reduction of the construction and maintenance process. Despite the difficult, triangular building perimeter the new house managed to meet the needed qualifications in order to take the first place on the list of the certified... Altro

The Beehive Project: honeycomb house

The beehive project: the honeycomb house With this project Bllend sets up an example of sustainable residential typology based on the concept of beehives. Commissioned by a construction and development company for the potential resident family, the project maximizes high standard residential space; utilizing high technology while it celebrates the simplicity of natural elements such as sun, native vegetation, rainwater, the natural landscape , color scheme and materials. The existing hill overlooking Athens provides the initial line according to which all activities are organised. The final elevation rises to welcome the morning sun while kneels to farewell the sunset. Original honeycomps follow an introverted architecture to organise... Altro

Padstow House

Situated in a wonderfully desolate, once-industrial landscape, Camel Quarry House sits above the shores of the Camel Estuary in Cornwall, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.   Its form is simple – a rugged exterior faces the quarry and estuary and a smoother façade looks out on to the more sheltered, rural landscape behind. The living area is on the uppermost floor, making the most of the extraordinary views, with a connecting terrace to spill out onto when the weather is fine. Jim Stephenson Jim Stephenson Jim Stephenson We decided to photograph the house again, 15 years after construction, curious to see how it has settled into its surroundings, both inside and out.   The external slate walls... N+C Townhouse @ Geelong

Once occupied by a dilapidated dwelling, this new residence explores how contemporary, sustainable architecture can rest peacefully with heritage neighbours. The split-level residence follows the natural topography of the site and leads one along a continuous walkway of recycled timber before opening to the double height northern living zone. This central spine through the linear pavilion also links the internal and external spaces through a system of pivoting, sliding and louvered screens. A central courtyard allows the house to breathe and provides varying degrees of openness and intimacy, light and fresh air. Sustainable living solutions include double glazed windows with Argon gas, rain water harvested into a series of underground... Altro
