Cave

Casa Decor is a unique interior design, trends, and lifestyle exhibition space held annually in a different location in the center of Madrid.

Ramón Esteve Estudio designed the Cave space for Gómez Grau, a stone supplier. It is conceived as a lobby that explores and showcases the expressive potential of natural stone. Through the combination of various types of rock, textures and chromatic contrasts, it creates a multisensory experience, connecting with nature and the forces that shape the landscape.

The installation is divided into two contrasting areas. The first, known as the quarry space, is a bright and enveloping environment that evokes the sensation of an excavation. Here, light flows gently across a carefully curated selection of stones: Cráter, Patagonia Hidrofinish, Taj Mahal Leather, and two treatments of Ivory Leather with a leather-like finish and a rougher version carved with a core drill. These materials were chosen for their warm tones and tactile diversity, enhancing the sense of raw beauty and serenity. Stone blocks, some with irregular, extraction-cut edges, serve as benches and sofas, reinforcing the connection to the landscape and the primitive act of carving into the earth.

The second space, inspired by volcanic landscapes, introduces a stark contrast. Dark, dense and atmospheric, it features Cristalo Marrón and Etna Black, stones selected for their deep chromatic intensity and geological character. The space is backlit, with lighting filtered through onyx to evoke the incandescent glow of lava, creating a sense of immersion in a subterranean, elemental world.

A ceiling structure composed of mouldings follows the geometry of quarry strata, suspending the installation and organising the space. The interplay of opaque and translucent surfaces amplifies the contrast between both zones. A bespoke sound composition and evocative scents heighten the experience, transforming the space into a sensory homage to stone, landscape, and geological time.
