HEMA built a new store and 8 apartments at the Lijnbaan Square in Gorredijk, The Netherlands. The Lijnbaan Square has recently been under great development. The renovated fashion stores and the new apartment buildings have upgraded the square incredibly. Hema in its former shape didn't fit this image. HEMA needed to make a strong statement to fit in between. That's why we opted for this clear urban facade.
The main composition of the facade is horizontal and has a classic structure of a plinth, midsection and roof. The facade is one gesture, the ornamentation is subordinate to the main form; it emphasizes the design. The horizontal line is enhanced by the detailing of floor tapes and parapets with shade lines. The corners are fluid which enhances the horizontality of the facade. The horizontal parapets are filled with a rhythmic pattern of windows and brick. The results in a regular and harmonious facade.
Material use is modest and classy. There is an extra layer of depth in the facade by use of different textures. Shiny metal, rugged stone and stucco mat.
The apartment living room is positioned lengthwise. This has the advantage that the housing benefit from both sun and terrace on the south and view on the lively square on the north side.
