A client couple, who lives overseas, only spends time in Korea during the fall season. In the past, they used to stay at a Hanok hotel, but decided to set up a house. We established the design language in the hope that it would be a space to express Korean traditional beauty according to the client's desire.
The haetae statue placed at the entrance is an auspicious animal that has long been erected at the entrance of palaces to prevent fires and disasters, and was placed with traditional meaning.
A traditional object, byeongpung(folding screen), was applied to kitchen furniture.
In addition to the folding screen, Korean traditional beauty were expressed in the space by incorporating elements of Hanok, such as daetdol* and toenmaru.
* daetdol(terrace stone): Stone steps under the floor of a traditional Korean house, used for stepping up or down from the floor.
By combining traditional natural materials such as wood and stone with modern materials such as metal and glass, we designed furniture that expresses the beauty of Korean crafts while also being practical.
Through the deep black color, we intended to carefully put a relaxed, calm atmosphere in the space. It was a meaningful project that incorporated Korean traditional beauty into the apartment space by reinterpreting the elements of Hanok in a modern way.
