An addition for a growing family, this two storey extension utilises a spiral spatial composition to establish open living within tight private spaces. Responding to a low cost budget and an on-site easement for waste water, the design utilises windows and stepped levels to direct movement and separate bedrooms without the use of doors. The small envelope of the renovation (25sqm) ensured material usage was minimised while several windows from the existing house were repurposed in the new renovation. Second hand glass bricks were chosen to provide dappled light to the main corridor, providing light for the main bedroom and shower area. The upstairs area, programmed mainly for children, will provide a sharp distinction to the parent’s bedroom below. Flexibility in the design can produce a second children’s bedroom to allow this small family to grow later in life. Large windows throughout the renovation are directed to the East, ensure the morning light is captured and minimising the hot western sun. This design feature provides beautiful views of the Castlemaine surrounding neighbourhood and gives the children of the house the perfect outlook.
