This is a renovation project in Yatsuo, Toyama, Japan that transformed the old Japanese house into the photographer, Yusuke Takano’s studio. To create the space, we remained the existing wood structure and add Geometric Abstraction to infill. Richly appointed, our client’s condo on Nicollet Island presented the opportunity to create an atmosphere, spaces to display their art collection and a highly detailed primary suite.  JMAD JMAD JMAD JMAD Architect James McNeal started with the stair railing that connects the upper floor to the suite. The suite was tight on space, so we wanted to use details that would open up the space without eliminating any. Since the tub takes up so much space, we decided to make the tub an art and water feature - with a hand-carved dragon serving at the helm. Round Sky and Angular Ground The phrase, “The sky is round and the ground is angular.” is an old-saying found in the Chinese astronomic book, Zhou bi suan jing. Ancient Fareast Asians acknowledged the boundary between the sky and buildings as curves. For that reason, traditional Korean buildings have distinctively curved roof lines. We took a philosophical approach in terms of designing building rather than the curved form itself. A new outlet for a health forward cafe has been designed by the Delhi based studio, Tangible Intangible Design Office or TI:DO as they are also known. Commissioned by the women led brand of UNCAFE, architectural design firm TI:DO was assigned with the task of developing a design language for their new outlet which within its 800 sqft could encapsulate the brand’s identity and personify the uniqueness of their food offerings with a unique spatial design. The winery was designed as an addition to the existing one-story old building. A new volume was added to the old building, incorporating production, office, and kitchen areas. The tasting hall and wine storage hall were situated within the existing building. The difference in the building’s character allowed for free access from the street to a closed terrace and entrance junction, providing a beautiful view of the mountains.
