SM Cottage

In the municipality of Batiscan, the SM chalet catches the eye of passersby from the banks of the St. Lawrence River with its elegant discretion. Here, the stars of the show are first and foremost the river and the forest; this secondary residence aims to highlight and celebrate them. Its footprint on the site is minimal, thanks to its compact form and ingenious stilt construction. Raphaël Thibodeau Raphaël Thibodeau Raphaël Thibodeau The choice of cedar shingle cladding draws attention, evoking a sense of calm and steady tranquility. The primary intentions are gently inscribed here: to anchor itself sustainably in the landscape, to weather gracefully alongside the tall maples scattered across the site, and to... もっと見る

Bunkie on the Hill

The smallest in a collection of cabins scattered across four family properties, a Bunkie on the Hill serves as a space of respite for a family-oriented client in Muskoka. The Bunkie, tucked into the trees at the top of a steep slope, was designed to provide a quiet space away from the action of the multi-generational family cottages below. Riley Snelling Riley Snelling Riley Snelling A contemporary interpretation of the traditional A-frame shape evokes the quintessential cabin in the woods, differentiated by shifted roof volumes. Reminiscent of the overlapping layers of shale rock in the surrounding landscape, the split roof design features two intersecting gables that create opportunities for window openings where the roof... もっと見る

Affrusk Cottage

As you approach Affrusk Cottage there is no doubt it holds its own and belongs  in its stunning agricultural setting  just outside the town of  Banchory, Aberdeenshire. This new build family home replaced a cottage that was on the site which had no significant architectural merit. The rural agricultural back drop of the area inspired the design which included materials such as slate, granite and timber,  all of which are long lasting and commonplace in the Northeast's historic architecture. The house is a modern t-shaped plan design with pitched roofs and  provides  a contemporary reflection  of the character and scale of agricultural buildings in the local area.  David Barbour David Barbour... もっと見る

East Hampton Cottage

This guest house and artist's studio in a secluded site in the Hamptons was designed in a primitive Italianate style inspired by the paintings of Giotto.  Situated around a central courtyard, the L-shaped building culminates in a tower that offers a viewing promontory from its hilltop location.  The earth-toned stucco façade provides a vibrant backdrop for the verdant setting, which extends to the house with potted plants and flower-beds. Michael Moran Michael Moran In contrast to the exterior’s exuberant palette, the interior exudes a cool modern calm perfect for showcasing the owner’s artwork and furnishings. One wing is devoted to the owner's art studio - a large open space illuminated by diffused... もっと見る

The cabin echoes our early construction experiences. Here, we are developing the shelter around a unique material: wood. The material allows integration and discretion in the landscape. The rhythm is mimetic. The composition is enough to shelter from the wind, looks, or rain. This simple gesture creates a limit, an invitation and a panorama. The trees and the shelter don’t touch each other but interact and create vertical and horizontal limits. Caption The gap in between the two walls invites the walker to enter the shelter. Inside, the atmosphere is warm, you can stand, sit, lie down, rest. The trees foliage filters the sun rays. Our imagination is summoned, reminds us of childhood memories. Cartier House

A hyphen between past and present, the Cartier project is a testament to a couple’s dedication to honour the architectural heritage of a quaint cottage in the Plateau Mont-Royal by giving it a second life. Compact and nestled on a city lot with restrained proportions, including a narrow lateral passage and a small green inner courtyard, the original house presented some challenges for its expansion. Meeting the clients’ desire to connect the indoor spaces to the exterior spaces without losing the home’s existing charm and intimacy would be no small feat. The architectural response thus articulated itself around a balance of old and new with conservation and modernization treatments of the exterior facades and of the home&... もっと見る

Kahshe Lake Cottage

The story of Kahshe Lake Cottage started in 1987, when the parents of Solares’s own Tom Knezic bought the water-access property and built a small bunkie as a temporary shelter. Their goal was to then design and build their dream family cottage. When the 1989 recession hit, their plans went on hold. In 2015, Tom’s father passed away, and his mother decided that it was time to finish what they had started. The bunkie still sits on the original property, surrounded by outdoor projects created over the years, including the firepit, slack lines, bike trails, even a hammock zone. The new cottage is sited on the neighbouring property to the north, acquired more recently for this project. The site is full of forest and Canadian Shield... もっと見る

The Dream Lab

The "Dream Lab" transforms a 1830s cottage in Parramatta - a former lolly shop - into a dream-like, fluid, continuous space for writing workshops and storytelling to encourage creativity in kids in western Sydney. LAVA and the Glue Society have collaborated again to create a visionary space for the Story Factory, a not-for-profit creative writing centre for young people.   Chris Bosse, director of LAVA, said: “The architectural concept was to connect the four separate rooms in this heritage building with a continuous ribbon, to promote creative thinking with non linear solutions. Like pouring a bucket of creativity into the spaces, it flows throughout the rooms and splashes out onto the street.” ‘Dream Lab’ br... もっと見る

Pest Cottage

A new generation reimagines a piece of family history – Pest CottageOn-site of the family compound was a former work shed that had been converted into a sparse, yet beautifully located cottage, fondly reserved for unruly grandchildren to let loose. The latest generation to oversee the grounds saw potential to make the little retreat something modern and much more comfortable. The goal was to renovate the space without losing the original character or designing over family nostalgia.   Choosing moments that matter mostA very tight budget required being selective with changes that would have the greatest impact within the 950 sq ft space. Doors and windows were enlarged, allowing both light and views to become more prominent... もっと見る

The Shieling

Internal rearrangement and extension to a historic cottage in a beautiful rural conservation village. Gillian Hayes What was the brief? Having recently bought this charming old cottage in the heart of Fintry’s conservation area, our clients’ initial aspiration was to create a glass box pointing at the view: the Campsie Fells. Together, we decided on a warmer solution to building in rural Scotland. We looked at the roof as a piece of Origami, with a glass clerestory below – protecting those views the homeowners were keen to elevate. Gillian Hayes What were the key challenges? Early liaison with Stirling Council Planning Department led us to a proposal that preserved elements defining the conservation area, li... もっと見る

Reinterpretation of traditions: building a house in Baden (France) The French municipality of Baden, located in the heart of the Gulf of Morbihan Regional Natural Park, offers a quality of life that is hard to find. In order to preserve and highlight the cultural and natural heritage, the buildings are obliged to follow strict regulations. Therefore, the main guide when designing this project by l’Atelier d’Ici was the compliance with existing rules. The developers and owners also had a couple of key ideas of their own: a contemporary house with plenty of light and large volumes of space.Twisting the tradition The local requirements dictate a number of the characteristics of the traditional cottages in this area of the French... もっと見る
