10 public structures that make use of salvaged wood

1. Highgate Family Home

North London based XUL Architecture have renovated this family home in Highgate to allow for better circulation and light. This family home in Highgate had multiple circulation issues with different levels and spaces flowing in an uncomfortably-unordered manner. By addressing these issues, XUL was able to create a space which is usable and filled with light. Key to the refurbishment of this property was opening views from the front door through to the garden, drawing light in from both angles. A signature to all XUL projects is to consider the three directions of light that can be channelled into the building; from above, back and front of a property. XUL opened up the plastic skylight above the stairwell and replaced with a contemporary g...

Oaks Parkhouse

Existing HouseLocated on a sunny hillside at the edge of Griffith Park, the existing house did not take advantage of the natural conditions of its site. Connections to the outdoors were inadequate. With main living areas located on the second floor, access to the outside was limited. The only usable outdoor space was located on the first floor and accessed only through an office space. Views from inside the house were restricted by the size and location of the windows. With lack of insulation, disregard for the building orientation and natural ventilation, the house was hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Although not understandable from the vantage point of the building’s entrance, the angled plan of the existing home provided...

Greenpoint, Brooklyn Energy Efficient Townhouse

Our client came to us with great excitement to bring this home back to life with a venerable attitude to its history. The neighborhood of Greenpoint is an evolving pocket of Brooklyn that is growing more diverse with each passing season. A third-generation Polish meat market can be found adjacent to a sleek, minimalist craft beer bar filled with young locals. It is truly the perfect setting for this project as our collective goal was to create a modern, comfortable home that embraced and even highlighted its past lives. Baxt Ingui Architects found this project to be unique among more typical New York City typologies because it is a wood framed, freestanding house that sits just outside a Landmarked district. These two factors, coupled with...

Pura Vida

The design intent was to create a space that embodies the “pura vida” way of life and captures the essence of the company. The importance of light, color and use of greenery were key elements in delivering a space that felt fresh and organic. The open floor plan with floor to ceiling glass, allows for an abundance of natural light to filter throughout the space and showcases the 180 degree ocean views only a few blocks away.   Everything is visible to everyone, from the reclaimed wood conference table and custom bronze chandelier to the ping pong table at the opposite end of the suite. Earthy tones and natural elements reminiscent of a beachside bungalow were paired with bold graphic wallcoverings, pops of color and metal...

West Park Contemporary

My clients had originally hired me to design their contemporary dream home on a beautiful West Park lot on the Hudson River. We were well underway on the design when the opportunity arose for them to purchase a second lot—the property directly above their current one.  This new lot contained the foundation of a spec house, which was situated to look directly down onto my clients’ new home. They purchased the lot and we started design on what would ultimately become their guest house.   There were two challenges to this new project: (1) Designing something contemporary that fit on the existing foundation, since the original spec house was not my clients preferred architectural style and (2) my clients required the hou...

Limelight Ketchum

Located near the Sun Valley ski area, the Limelight Ketchum Hotel embodies the heritage of its surroundings to create an approachable destination for travelers and the local community. Inspired by Ketchum’s motto, “Small town, big life!,” and taking cues from the area’s laid-back vibe, a modern interior program was intended to nurture body and soul. The overall design theme is the establishment of the hotel as a community “base camp” in which guests can start and end each day. In public spaces, the concept was executed through design of a large, centrally located seating area focused on a monolithic stone fireplace hearth, dubbed the “campfire.” The relationship of the fireplace to an overhead...

Hockley Valley Chalet

Challeges: This family chalet was due for an evolution of sorts – one that would honour their many years there, but also look toward the future. Recognizing that the property had spectacular views that weren’t being maximized, ASQUITH focused much of their energy on the removal of walls, doubling the size of windows, increasing air circulation and designing an expansive deck that took full advantage of the breathtaking vista.   What materials did you choose and why? Retaining some of the home’s history was important to the owners. ASQUITH achieved this by incorporating the existing reclaimed wood beams. As well, they put great effort into choosing additional wood accents that would complement throughout, including...
