10 homes making use of straw bale construction and insulation
かやぶき屋根、アドベレンガの結合材、断熱材、ストローベイル建築など、わらには建築材料としての長い歴史がある。
世界の炭素排出量の37パーセントを占める建設部門が、気候変動という非常事態に大きな役割を果たしていることは、ますます認識されるようになっている。再生可能で、リサイクル可能で、地域で入手可能で、しかも低コストの材料であるストローは、コンクリートやスチールといった従来の建築材料に代わる、気候変動に優しい代替材料を提供する。国連環境計画による最近の報告書（2023年）は、成長が早く再生可能なバイオマス資源である竹とわらの年間供給量が需要を上回っていることを強調している。この報告書は、ポリスチレン、ミネラルウッド、セルロースファイバー、ロックウールなどの従来型の素材と比較した場合、ストローベイル断熱材の低炭素面での利点に注目している。実際、ストローは建設セクターの脱炭素化にとって現実的な解決策となる。
ストローベイル構造では、構造材（木材との組み合わせ）や建物の断熱材（床、天井、屋根、壁）として、藁の俵や束を使用するのが一般的である。この生物由来の材料は、通常、農作物である穀物の副産物であり、耐火性（俵が密に詰まった状態）、耐久性、騒音減衰性を備えている。わらは豊富で、再生可能で、生分解性があり、天然の炭素吸収源として機能する。とはいえ、建築資材としてのわらには、湿気による損傷の管理、安定した品質のベールの入手、建築許可や保険の確保など、いくつかの問題がある。とはいえ、低炭素建築の解決策を前進させるためには、このような問題を、前進を阻む障害ではなく、克服すべき課題（例えば、自然換気は湿気と闘うことができる）として捉えることが理想的である。

Tane Garden House serves as a symbol of sustainability on Vitra Campus
A new construction on the Weil am Rhein campus of Swiss family-owned furniture company Vitra has been unveiled. The Tane Garden House, designed by Japanese architect Tsuyoshi Tane of Paris-based Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects, is a modest dwelling, a thatched hut raised on squat stone legs.

The idea for a garden house emerged when Tsuyoshi Tane accompanied Rolf Fehlbaum (Chairman Emeritus of Vitra) on a drive around Weil am Rhein (a suburb of Basel). Recounting memories of his childhood and the fields on which Vitra Campus sits today, Fehlbaum discussed how he was planning on including nature in the campus’s next phase of development. Straw Meeting Room
The project is a self build small meeting room built as a load bearing straw bale building with lime exterior and interior finishes. The outside has been painted by an artist friend and collaborator Cecilia Sjoholm.
The design is a simple cube with a free floating metal roof above the straw insulated cube. The idea behind the project was for the studio to test and gain first hand knowledge of building with natural building materials. Straw sequesters carbon, is biodegradable, highly insulating, hygroscopic and highly available local building material in the UK. Its fun to work with and as we have proven anyone can do it.

The future of architecture through 10 biobased materials
As more architects, and their clients, prioritize sustainability goals and the connection to site and history, biobased materials are being more frequently used to create buildings around the globe.
