An old mansion in Brussels, Belgium has been renovated and expanded by JUMA architects to restore the charm of the original building while adding a new modern element.

To bring back the original character of the mansion, the client asked for new detail decoration and ornamentation on several of the walls, the ceilings and at the level of the interior doors. In a more major move, a majestic staircase in the hall was reconstructed. This nod to the classical contrasts sharply with the austere design of the extension to the rear.

Here, the design concept was to allow as much light as possible to infiltrate. Windows 3 meters in height were specified to both the kitchen and the living room areas.

On the subterranean level, there is a complete spa with 15.5m long indoor pool, sauna, massage room and gym. Situated at grade, it appears one can swim straight into the garden, resulting in a powerful interior to exterior connection. From above, four large rectangular skylights draw light into the area.

The upper floor is furnished as a main bedroom with dressing room, bathroom, desk and extra space for another room and /or desk. On the second floor, there are 4 other rooms with associated bathrooms.

Restored to its original state, the architects have only widened the entrance gate to allow for a car to drive in.
