Dutch designer Ward Wijnant is inspired by the possibility that one tree can produce a variety of different patterns. For his design BLEND Ward uses different sawing techniques to emphasize patches of different woodgrains.
Woodgrains appear as stripes by using the quarter sawing technique. With a regular method woodgrains appear as the commonly seen flame patterns. BLEND blends both quarter and plain sawing techniques to create a playful mix of wood patterns.
Ward developed his craftsmanship at the Wood and Furniture College in Tilburg and started experimenting with materials at the Design Academy Eindhoven. In his current practice he sees it as his mission to interpret the diversity of old methods and materials in contemporary design that pays attention to a historical understanding of the original artisanal mastery.
