Rising from a breathtaking and endless landscape of cork oak groves and ecological mountain olive groves in Monesterio in Spain, La Hacienda Los Acepados is a 19th-century estate formerly used for agriculture and livestock farming. EOVASTUDIO undertook the renovation project to fulfil the owner’s vision of restoring the architectural beauty of the family estate and integrating it into the surrounding landscape.
The building typology is typical of rural construction in the area, featuring load-bearing brick walls and a sloping ceramic tile roof, which stand out for their robust structure and form. Utilizing the surrounding environment and its natural hues as a source of inspiration, the design uses handmade enamelled ceramic cladding to reflect the shades from the leaves of the trees, olive oil, grapes, wine, acorns, and cork, as well as wild honey, or the flowers of the fruit trees into the various spaces.
The final composition comprises a variety of textures and patterns reimagined in a contemporary fashion, including the restoration of the original hydraulic tiles, the addition of new earthenware slabs to the existing ones, and the glazed ceramic mosaic cladding.
The structure surrounds a sizable, traditional central courtyard, where a hexagonal fountain and water create a calm, welcoming environment amidst the greenery. All the rooms adjacent to the courtyard receive ample daylight. At night, soft lighting tucked away in the vegetation adds warmth and mystery to the area.
The complex is enclosed by a fence and has private gardens and outdoor areas that are open to the surroundings, including a swimming pool surrounded by local trees and aromatic plants.
The architectural features, structure and materials of the former hacienda evolved from the uniqueness of the traditional typologies of the region. Therefore, the renovation seeks to integrate the design into the surrounding landscape in addition to its recreational purposes.
