The four-story Greenville County Administration Building in Falls Park, South Carolina, by Foster + Partners is now complete. The striking design forms part of an overall masterplan by RocaPoint Partners and fosters a natural link between Falls Park, the new Cancer Survivor’s Park, and the nearby Swamp Rabbit Trail.

Resembling a bow tie in plan, the building’s massing is divided between two volumes of office blocks. The winged roof shades a walkway and plaza between the volumes, as well as an elevated skybridge that connects the third floors of the two blocks. Over this open volume, the roof protrudes in a pyramidal canopy comprising a series of translucent panels in brown metal frames.

Designed to maximize transparency, the façade features glass curtain walling. The architects note that the substantial use of glazing is intended to erase the boundary between the public and the government symbolically. Warm-coloured metal was specified in combination with the glazing to create accents on the façade and reference the Greenville Country landscape, as well as the brick masonry historically used in the region.

By contrast, the interiors are largely finished in bright white. The interior lobby is a double-height space with supporting columns wrapped in a metallic finish, thus creating a distinct visual and physical marker.

The plaza at the fore of the building features a Veterans Memorial Wall made partially of Corten steel. The memorial fans out from the entrance and sits adjacent to a fountain. Cafes and restaurants are planned to front onto the plaza, activating the space with both office workers and visitors.

“The building will make a significant contribution to Greenville County, acting as a place for local people to meet in serene natural surroundings,” says Nigel Dancey, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners.
