Michal Matalon revitalises a derelict Ottoman house into a boutique hotel in the old city of Acre

Located in the centre of the beautiful old city of Acre, a heritage site recognised by UNESCO in Israel, the Melisende hotel, designed by studio Home Maker, is a transformation of an old, neglected Ottoman House into a Mediterranean-style boutique lodging.

Comprising six distinct units catering to various needs, whether it is an adventurous outing or a romantic getaway, the hotel perfectly brings the old and new together in a harmonious design. The high and striking arches foster a connection to the local history, while contemporary design and fittings provide a touch of luxury.

The restoration process involved removing the plasterwork and exposing the underlying stone walls. Under the supervision of the Antiquities Authority, the 170sqm complex was restored to its former Ottoman glory. Other renovation work includes retaining the support pillars and extending the yard to install a jacuzzi pool and tropical garden.

The stone walls of the suite interiors are covered in mineral plasterwork to prevent the crumbling of the original limestone, then layered with a decorative faded pink plaster to give a subdued look. The floors feature a light grey porcelain granite tile with hints of terrazzo, while pale oak wooden furniture creates a subtle contrast.

Various plants are housed in Corten planters in the courtyard, illuminated by ceiling lamps that shine on the doors and arches as well as by a garland of string lights hanging in the seating area.

Therefore, the project beautifully revives the heritage structure by giving it a new meaning and life as a luxury oasis in the old city.
