Archello Awards 2023 has revealed the winning projects selected as winners of this year’s awards. For each of the 27 categories, one project was awarded by jury vote, and one project was awarded by public vote. The jury has selected the Taipei Performing Arts Center by OMA as Overall Building of the Year.
Located at Taipei’s Shilin Night Market, Taipei Performing Arts Center houses three theaters plugged into a central cube. It is a flexible building that allows performing spaces to be coupled for new theatrical possibilities. The building features multiple 'front' facades defined by the theaters protruding from the building and hovering above a landscaped plaza, which serves as an additional public stage.
The cube is lifted off the ground to make way for a 'public loop' extending from the street into the theater. The general public is invited into the theater through the loop, which runs through the theater’s typically-hidden infrastructure and spaces of production. Portal windows along the loop permit visitors to peer inside for a look at the performances and technical spaces.
The central cube consolidates theater stages, back stages, support spaces of the three theaters, and the public spaces for spectators into a single and efficient whole. The theaters can be modified or merged for a variety of scenarios and uses. These include the signature 800-seat Globe Playhouse, a sphere which features an inner and an outer shell with a circulation space that brings visitors into the auditorium between the two layers.
The Building of the Year is the top-ranking Archello Award honoring the best overall building completed in 2022. "We share the honor with the Taipei Performing Arts Center, KRIS YAO | ARTECH, and numerous collaborators who were instrumental in realizing this extremely contextual project," says David Gianotten, OMA Managing Partner who led the project with Rem Koolhaas and Chiaju Lin. "Rem and I have been back to Taipei several times since the building’s completion. Each time, we see the artists and the public engage with the building in new ways. I am proud to be part of the team that made this architecture for the creative life of all."
