The Rechtbank Rotterdam (Rotterdam District Court) has undergone a major renovation of its public reception area, along with its knowledge centre, meeting and office areas.

The renovation focuses on the existing galleria, a glass-covered outdoor area between three volumes - one of which includes a metro station. Transparency is maintained along with the introduction of warmth through the use of selected material and an improved circulation concept.

In cooperation with Fokkema & Partners Architecten, Dura Vermeer won the design and build tender in 2017 for the renovation. Flooded with natural lights thanks to the glass roof, the interior space is complemented with the addition of warm natural stone and wood.

The galleria is connected to the courtroom on one side, with offices, knowledge centre and judiciary training centre on the other. The traffic flow of the different users comes together, enhancing the social nature of the galleria, while at the same time ensuring intuitive navigation with distinct and separate access points to the different buildings and uses. Furthermore, the warmth of the galleria with its informal seating provides a pleasant waiting area for visitors.

Offices and training spaces were further renovated to include warm wood accents. The court and office areas remained in use throughout the phased renovation.
