As the name suggests, half of the house of Villa Fifty-Fifty, designed by Studioninedots, consists of indoor and the other half of outdoor spaces.
By alternating them in a checkerboard pattern, reminiscent of floorplans by SANAA, the office has made them into equal parts.
“You’re neither inside nor outside, you move from inside to outside to return inside and end up somewhere outside.”
Jurjen van der Horst, Architect at Studioninedots
The villa is located in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, on the edge of Strijp T and an adjacent estate. The residents wished for a home that sets the conditions for a more minimalist lifestyle and stronger connection to nature. Studioninedots translated this into a pavilion-like villa in which open and closed volumes alternate with covered or uncovered outdoor spaces. While the many greenery enhances the outdoor feel and the connection to the adjacent estate, the industrial-looking materials echo Strijp R's factory past.
The plot is filled up completely to its borders. The functions are distributed over the building according to the checkerboard pattern. The tower contains functions for the whole family along with the daughters' rooms and facilities for independent living.
The villa is mainly made of concrete and glass. The tower is clad in polished aluminum, which reflects the surrounding greenery and weather changes.
The bathroom volume is clad with flagstones, the walls in the bedroom and office are covered with glazed bathroom tiles, and the circular storage room is made of semi-transparent corrugated sheet.
