In the beautiful garden of a historic Tokyo house, constructed in 1927 by industrialist Manicki Yamaguchi, this gently floating sunshade designed by Junya Ishigami + Associates softly blocks sunlight while embodying a sense of antiquity.

Though newly constructed, the structure, which covers the entirety of the garden, is made of wood that is treated using the ancient technique of yakisugi, by which cedar is burned to obtain a charred and aged finish.

Appearing like a cool shadow that floats and weaves amongst the trees, the installation screens out the surrounding high-rise buildings that over the years have appeared as the urban surroundings have grown.

Meanwhile, holes within the structure allow the sunlight to gently filter down.
