On the outer skirts of Laterns Bonacker, Holiday Home Hagen by Marte.Marte Architects is part of a small hamlet of contemporary wooden buildings realized on a steep hillside.

Initially appearing simple and abstract, the façade is actually a ‘knitted’ coat of wooden logs that dress the structure and hide or reveal as desired the windows behind.

Allowing the slope to largely remain unaltered, the body of the home pushes into the terrain, as does the holiday home located across the mountain slope. Constructed with a panel system, the three-storey structure has a saddle roof with a pronounced overhang and a filigree rain gutter.

A narrow meandering path leads to the west entrance gate where there is also a water basin and seating area. Inside, the floor plan is conceived as a highly functional box. Ash floor and silver fir panels on the wall and ceiling enrich the small adjoining rooms and bedrooms while the sauna and sanitary area celebrate subtle restraint with their pale, smoothed surfaces.

By contrast, the loft area is open and dramatic, bringing in impressive panoramic views. On the living floor, the open and fluid nature of the home’s exterior shell likewise opens up to mountain views.

Here, one lives and celebrates with the seasons, whether it is the wind and snow flurries, or the summer sun.
