Reference projects
Takoi has converted an old service garage into an urban restaurant in Detroit's Millennium Village, nestled between two major roads. The design process, starting in 2014 during Detroit's bankruptcy, required creativity. The client requested an open kitchen, booth seating, and a communal table, while other design elements were left open to interpretation.
To accommodate the kitchen and bathrooms, an addition was built since the original structure lacked a back wall. Skylights were implemented in the new roof to maximize natural light while minimizing construction costs. The facade was clad with 16mm Multiwall Polycarbonate in Ice color, and the existing patinated walls were preserved to further reduce expenses.
Ann Veronica Janssens at Nasher Sculpture Center
A site-specific pavilion at the Nasher Sculpture Center showcases the work of Belgian artist Ann Veronica Janssens, marking her first solo museum presentation in the United States. Renowned for her light art, Janssens uses projections and fog to enhance viewers’ perceptions of their surroundings. Designed by 5G Studio Collaborative, the freestanding pavilion titled "Blue, Red, and Yellow" features polycarbonate panels in three colors on the exterior, while the interior is filled with artificial fog. Janssens describes the experience of gazing at mist as one that dissolves obstacles and adds a tangible quality to light.
Visitors moving through the pavilion encounter shifting perspectives and can experience disorientation as light filters through the walls, illuminating the fog in vibrant hues. The pavilion was displayed at the Nasher Sculpture Center in 2016 and was constructed quickly using polycarbonate to minimize detailing, allowing the structure to blend with the fog and enhance the visitor experience.
