I want to talk to you today about Campolar Páramo care home, which is located in Santa María del Páramo (Léon, Spain). This centre has space for over 100 people with both single and double rooms available, and a team dedicated to caring for and helping the elderly.
When architect Jose Manuel Buron got in touch with us, we knew straight away that the residents’ well-being was going to take centre stage.
So we got to work.
The building’s exterior is made up of several elements: The facade, woodwork and shelters, which together comprise the outermost layer. Their goal is to protect the building against external elements, such as the cold, heat, rain, wind and humidity.
The goal of energy efficiency is to optimise energy consumption and reduce the associated costs without affecting the residents’ day-to-day comfort.
Let's take a closer look at it:
The ventilated facades and excellent insulation help reduce the financial and environmental hit associated with excess energy consumption, creating a building that is capable of saving up to 30% in energy.
In terms of comfort and interior temperature, one of the decisive factors when determining whether or not a building meets efficiency criteria is its U-value, or its thermal transmittance.
The U-value is the measurement of the heat flow over a period of time and for each surface, transferred through a built structure that can be comprised of one or several layers of material.
In ventilated facades, insulation is placed inside the air ventilation chamber, on the so-called cold side of the supporting wall, adding continuous insulation along the inside face of the facade, while preventing the creation of thermal bridges in pillars and slabs.
This reduces heat loss (particularly during the cold winter months), and it also decreases the need to use heating. The opposite can be said for the summer months, as the heat doesn't reach the inner layers as easily.
