This project consists of 3 extended family houses where mother, uncle, daughter and son-in-law’s family would like to live together with shared common area such as garden, service area and parking, but at the same time each family also needs some privacy. Especially the family of daughter and son-in-law who are yoga teachers, require a house with indoor and outdoor space to practice yoga while they enjoy nature. In addition to, there are some skylights that covered with trees to allow those who use space inside the house feeling closer to the trees and the sky without overheated.
The project is located in Soi On Nut, one of the dense residential area in Bangkok, surrounded by 2-3 storey houses. The planning of buildings and spaces has been designed to be consistent and harmoniouse with the surrounding context. The owner would like to build 3 houses on a private land surrounded with the 2-3 storey houses like other densely populated areas in Bangkok.
Each house has been planned separately to have its own privacy. The uncle house is located in the front area for easy access, and have privacy from the mother’s house and the daughter and son-in-law’s house. Mother’s house is connected to uncle’s house and share some facilities such as living room, kitchen, storage room, laundry room, maid room etc. together, therefore they can join each other occasionally.
And the daughter and son-in-law’s house garden is also connected to the mother’s living & dining area. This makes it possible to use the garden area for activities or to relax together among families. In addition, all 3 houses share the entrance and the parking in order to save space in the layout with the intention of having as much space in the garden as possible due to the owners like to live with nature.
Moreover, each house also shares terrace and service area, so the size of the houses do not need to be excessively large. Each house has its own character to fit the owners and the context. Gable roofs are used for harmony with the surrounding, also have some skylights to get closer to nature and have enough light.
Materials that match with nature and surrounding such as glass, wood, stone, black iron walls that contrast with the green color of surrounding trees, are used for the houses. Furthermore, the skylights are made of insulated glass to protect heat entering inside the house, additionally there are some trees that planted to block heat to the skylights, but allow light to get inside the house in some area such as yoga area or the bathroom to keep it clean and draw nature closer even inside the building.
