Taking a decidedly handcrafted approach to design and architecture, Mathoura Road by Carr responds to its site and context while bringing an adept modernist touch. Sixluxury apartments, each set over a single level, are characterised by careful planning for the end users’ comfort.
Sitting in the streetscape of Toorak, the apartments at Mathoura Road are among Roy Grounds’ mid-century icon ‘Moonbria’. Given the illustrious surrounds, it was important that Mathoura bring an enduring quality, which also fed into the client brief of ‘simplicity’. This project brings the design language from the outside to the inside – tones, palette and texture – along with a selection of innovative detailing.
Mathoura Road is defined by a distinct materiality and texture, tempered with an overarching reductionist aesthetic. The exterior façade is defined by the hand-madelinear bricks.Echoing the external brickwork, the master en-suites feature routed natural stone – an experimental technique that creates a seamless transition.
Consideration for interior comfort was another key factor in Mathoura Road. Every apartment draws light deep into the interior, specifically oriented with views, aspects and openings to create cross ventilation. Recessed winter gardens align with the vision of bringing outdoors in and vice versa, while greenery illuminates every viewpoint.
For the interiors, the volumes are generous yet intimate. Even though the colour scheme and tones are soft and muted, the materiality is rich with texture, creating an elevated tactility through a combination of brushed and natural finishes. The kitchen is both a statement and a hub, featuring a reverse chamfered detail, making for soft edges.
There is no compromise on Mathoura Road. Meticulous consideration for the end users and their ultimate enjoyment is coupled with exceptional levels of custom detailing.
